Materials and Supplies

Sustainable local materials available

Estimated budget per person to buy “starter Paelo survival kits”:

Serranova will stock onsite a collection of supplies to start you off, including free firewood and branches. If you need to purchase items, we’ll arrange for Maine-based vendors to sell us Paelo-style items throughout the year for members. And you can purchase your items beforehand and have them shipped to the property in advance, if you prefer.

Here’s an example shopping list for a shelter:

  • Free gathered brush and sticks, mud, earth, grasses
  • 15 cedar logs 3” x 8’ ($6.25 x 15) = $94
  • 15 bamboo sticks = 3/4″ x 72″ = $40
  • 100 ft Manila Rope, 3/4” = $65
  • 100 ft Sisal Rope, 1/2” = $36
  • Animal hides, waterproof = $5 for a 3’ x 2’ piece x 20 = $100
  • Furs for warmth (e.g. Rabbit 2’x4’ = $60) x4 = $200
  • Total: approx $535.
  • More options added as we all learn what works best for the season you prefer.

We will provide the firewood needed for fires and drinking water. Maine law does not allow firewood brought in from outside our state.

For food supplies, we’ll also handle ordering fresh meat from local butchers and plant foods to cook up authentically, and members can plant era-authentic plants like hazelnuts and beach plums, etc. As we know member visiting patterns and prefs, Serranova can source the “raw materials” for members to eat. As a fall back, there’s local grocery shopping within 25 minutes 🙂

See more on our cooking page.

Onsite Store

We will also stock a small store with personal necessities & toiletries for men and women. Maybe other popular items can be added, too. And of course there are shopping malls 30 minutes away in southern Maine and New Hampshire.

Furs – hypoallergenic?

This external website is a good resource for sustainable furs. https://iere.org/what-animal-fur-is-best-for-blankets/

What is the difference between wool and fur in blankets? While both are animal fibers, wool comes from sheep, while fur typically refers to the pelts of other animals, like beaver, fox, or rabbit. Fur is often denser and may have a different texture than wool. Alpaca fur is considered one of the most hypoallergenic animal furs because it naturally lacks lanolin, a wax found in sheep’s wool that often triggers allergic reactions.
